Family Therapy in Illinois and Tennessee
Dinner gets quiet. Someone slams a door. The same argument loops for the third time this week, and you are the one left wondering how a house full of people can feel this far apart. If you have been searching for family therapy in Illinois, or anywhere across Illinois or Tennessee virtually, you already know something needs to shift, and you are looking for a place that can actually help.
Family therapy is counseling that brings household members into the room together. The work focuses on how everyone relates, reacts, and repeats, rather than one person carrying the problem alone. At Stride Mental Health, sessions happen in person at our office or virtually anywhere in Illinois and Tennessee.

Family therapy fits parents and children, blended families, siblings, and adult family members trying to repair strained ties. It helps when tension shows up between generations, after a big change, or when one person's struggle affects everyone.
We work with children, teens, adults, and older adults. Couples and families make up a steady part of who we see, alongside people managing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, ADHD, and neurodivergence. Right now there is specific room and interest in supporting more neurodivergent clients and their families.
When conflict runs between partners as well as across the household, couples therapy can address the patterns that keep resurfacing at home.
Many couples come in wanting to rebuild the way you talk to each other after months of arguments that never seem to resolve. Others are steady partners simply trying to prepare for a big change, like a new baby, a move, or a blended family.
Partners often reach out when they have been feeling stuck for a long time and no longer know how to move forward. When tension stretches beyond the two of you, it can help to bring the wider family into the room and work through the patterns together.
-
People rarely open with a diagnosis. They say things like "I feel stuck," "life is overwhelming," or "I don't know how to help someone I love."
A few situations come up again and again:
A teenager who has gone silent, and parents who feel shut out.
Partners raising kids together while barely speaking as a couple.
A family reorganizing after a loss, a move, or a health crisis.
Old resentments that surface every holiday and never resolve.
Grief often sits underneath the friction, even when no one has died. The end of a relationship, a job loss, a change in health or ability, infertility, a shifting identity. All of it can leave a family grieving something they never named.
Parents and partners often arrive feeling stuck, unsure how to move a strained relationship forward.

Getting started is simple. After you reach out, we follow up by email within one to two days, sort out insurance versus private pay, and note your goals of care. We send a secure portal link for intake paperwork, verify your coverage, then match you with a clinician who fits what you are working toward.
Sessions run about 53 to 60 minutes. Early on, your therapist listens to how each of you sees things and looks for the patterns underneath the arguments. From there you practice new ways of speaking and listening, and you leave with something concrete to try before the next visit.
Our clinicians draw on approaches like Internal Family Systems, CBT, and DBT, chosen to fit what your relationship needs. We do not pretend to be everything to everyone. If a stronger fit exists elsewhere, we will help you find it. Intake paperwork covers informed consent, a short questionnaire, and two brief check-ins on mood and anxiety. Sessions run 53 to 60 minutes.
In the room, the focus stays on the patterns between people, not on assigning blame. Many families find that improving how you communicate is the first step toward untangling long-standing tension. Your therapist helps each person be heard and helps the family try new ways of responding.
Our clinicians bring more than a decade of combined training in trauma, grief, anxiety, and relationships. Marie Mullins has practiced since 2012 with EMDR and Brainspotting training and deep experience in trauma recovery. Allison Schieferle Uhlenbrock has worked since 2014 across hospital, school, and private practice settings, with training in EMDR and Internal Family Systems. Hannah Courtney draws on somatic and integrative approaches and is an affirming provider for LGBTQ and neurodivergent clients.
What family therapy can realistically do
Family therapy will not erase every disagreement. What it can do is change how your family handles the hard moments. Conversations that used to end in shouting can start to stay open.
Our goal is to help your family move closer to the life you want, at the stride and pace that works for you. Family strain and a marriage that feels broken frequently overlap, and working on both together can bring real relief.
FAQs
How much does family therapy cost?
1
Cost depends on your insurance and the length of your sessions. We are in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, and Caterpillar-based plans, and we also see clients privately. When you reach out, we verify your coverage and explain your options before anything is scheduled, so there are no surprises.
How soon can we get started?
2
Most families hear back within one to two days of reaching out. From there, a first appointment ranges from as soon as possible to a week or two, depending on the clinician. When a clinician is full, we keep a waitlist and let you know where things stand.
Does everyone in the family have to come to every session?
3
No, not every member has to attend every session. Some weeks the whole household comes in, and other weeks the work is better served by a smaller group or an individual session. Your therapist helps decide who is in the room based on what the family is working on.
What if family therapy is not the right fit for us?
4
We tell families this plainly: you are buying our services, and we are here to help you get what you want. If a Stride therapist cannot realistically partner with you on your goals, we work with colleagues across Central Illinois and Tennessee to find a better-fit provider. You will not be left to figure it out alone.
